Immigration & Refugee Law

Depending on our resources and the issue, HALCO may provide free summary advice and/or representation to people living with HIV in Ontario. Other than in very unique circumstances, we do not assist with refugee claims as Legal Aid Ontario certificates are available.

If we cannot provide advice or brief services, we will do our best to provide information and referrals to other services. We will also provide consults to other lawyers on any HIV-related immigration/refugee matters.

We may be able to assist with the following matters:

  • Interim Federal Health Program Issues
  • Immigration Medical Exam Issues
  • Inadmissibility Issues (e.g., medical)
  • Family Sponsorships
  • Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications
  • Immigration Appeal Division matters
  • Refugee Claims (summary advice only)
  • Refugee Appeals
  • Changing lawyers who accept legal aid certificates (only if HIV-related)
  • Letters of Invitation (only if HIV-related)
  • Pre-Removal Risk Assessments (summary advice only)
  • Detention/Removals (only if HIV-related)

Please not that HALCO does not assist with completing immigration forms.
