In December 2024, the Ontario government introduced the Restricting Public Consumption of
Illegal Substances Act, 2024, which, if passed, would prohibit the use of illegal substances in
public places. The law would give police officers the power to direct people to stop using
illegal drugs in public places and direct the person to leave, even when the place is a tent or
other living space. If people do not comply with the police request, they could be fined up to
$10,000 and/or face up to six months in jail.
While the Bill was not passed into law before the Ontario election in February 2025, it may be reintroduced in the future.
