Ontario Extends Emergency Orders until May 29

The Ontario government has announced that they are extending, until May 29, 2020, all emergency orders that have been put in place under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (Emergency Act). The government first declared a state of emergency in relation to COVID-19 on March 17, 2020, under the Emergency Act.

Under the Emergency Act, government can do such things as control movement and close down public or private places. To date, various measures have been announced, including the prohibition of gatherings of more than five people (with certain exceptions) as well as the closure of non-essential businesses and closure of outdoor recreational amenities (e.g., outdoor playgrounds and sports facilities). Penalties for not following the legislation include fines and jail time.

For the full list of orders in place until at least May 29, 2020, see here.
