HALCO and Partners Successful in Stopping Sharing of Positive COVID-19 Results with Police (Updated September 30, 2020)

On July 16, 2020, a coalition, including HALCO, launched an urgent court application challenging the Government of Ontario’s decision to share with police the personal information of Ontarians who test positive for COVID-19.

Since commencing the lawsuit, the Ontario government agreed to end police access to positive COVID-19 test results. In light of this decision, the coalition has discontinued its lawsuit and is calling on police services to (i) destroy the personal health information that was accessed and (ii) conduct audits to ensure the access complied with policy and legal requirements.

The coalition’s press release can be found here.

The coalition’s statement to media can be found here.

The coalition’s Notice of Application can be found here.

The coalition’s letter to the Solicitor General (Ontario) can be found here.

The coalition is comprised of:

  • Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS)
  • Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC)
  • Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA)
  • HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO)
