HALCO and Partners Call on Ontario to Implement Recommendations from Inquest into Overdose Deaths of Two People in Jail

Earlier this year, a coalition comprised of the HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO), PASAN and Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network intervened in an inquest into the overdose deaths of two people in custody at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre.

As a result of this inquest, the jury made 80 recommendations, many of which advance the health and human rights of people in correctional facilities.

On June 2, 2020, the coalition sent a letter to the Ontario government to draw their attention to specific recommendations which would protect and safeguard the health of people in correctional facilities who use drugs, and to request a meeting to discuss the recommendations.

The coalition has not yet received a response.
