HIV & the Law Advocate's Manual Published by HALCO - HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic (Ontario) In 1998, HALCO received a grant from the Trillium Foundation to begin production of an Advocate's Manual. The Manual is entitled "HIV & The Law Advocate's Manual". Additional funding from the Community Innovation Fund of GlaxoSmithKline in partnership with Shire BioChem Inc. and Health Canada's AIDS Community Action Program helped us to increase the number of chapters produced. The Manual is designed for use by HIV positive people, their families, friends and care-givers, legal clinics across the province, health providers, social service agencies and HIV/AIDS community service organizations in Ontario. This Manual has not been reviewed/revised since the original publication in 2004. The law and policies/practices can change. If you have a question or problem, we recommend that you get legal advice about your situation. You can contact HALCO – HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic (Ontario) or your local legal clinic. The Manual is in .pdf format - click on the link below to download Acrobat Reader:
If you have difficulty accessing anything on our website, please call us. Remember:
The law for residential tenants in Ontario changed in January 2007, so the "Landlord and Tenant and HIV/AIDS" Chapter 6 of the Manual is no longer accurate. The Ontario Residential Tenancies Act [RTA] took effect on January 31, 2007. The RTA replaced the Tenant Protection Act. For information about the RTA, please contact our office or your local legal clinic. You can also contact the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board www.ltb.gov.on.ca or toll-free at 1-888-332-3234.
